Best DJ Headphones? You decide.

We reviewed the top 5 DJ headphones earlier, but what is the best DJ headphones set out there?  Well, that’s a tough question to answer.  We’ll go over a few of the factors that you’ll need to consider when choosing the best DJ headphones for you.

Price:

Price is a big factor for all of us; especially when you’re just starting out, but there’s a balance between quality and cheap headphones.  While there are a lot of quality headphones for DJs, there are a few other things to look for when selecting a decent set of headphones for an affordable price.  Sennheiser is well known for their wide price ranges, and quality products.

Versatility:

Whether you’re on stage or practicing at home, your DJ headphones need to be able to accommodate what you’re doing.  You need to make sure that your headphones include not only a 1/8″ plug, but a 1/4″ plug as well.  1/8″ is a standard for computers, MP3 players, and most other electronic devices.  However, professional DJ equipment often requires a 1/4″ plug in order to work.  Many headphones include an adapter for 1/4″ plugs.  Having both allows you to use your headphones both on a personal and professional level.

Comfort:

Comfort might not seem like a big deal… until your head is aching after a full night of spinning.  Comfort is a huge factor in DJ headphones.  Generally, lack of adjustment is what causes poor comfort.  In addition, you’ll often need to move an earpiece off of your ear during live DJing in order to be able to monitor your levels.  When looking for the perfect set of headphones you should look for well cushioned earpads as these help with isolation (a necessity for concentration).  Also, look for swiveling earpads, as these allow you to easily adjust your headphones for live performance.  Some headphones also have split headbands to ensure that they remain tight, even if you’re dancing behind your turntables.

Sound Quality:

Often, the deciding factor between cost and quality is the sound quality offered by your headphones.  A truly high quality set of headphones can not only capture low frequency bass, but also mid and high range sound.  Most modern music has a very wide frequency range, so in order to capture all of this sound, your headphones need to have a wide range.  Typically the human ear can hear between 20hz and 20,000hz.  Most headphones can easily cover this, but the wider the margin, typically the higher the sound quality will be.

Durability:

An often overlooked requirement for DJ headphones used in live settings is the durability aspect.  High impact plastics and aluminum generally provide plenty of strength.  Keep in mind that anything can happen during a live performance, so large surface areas can give your headphones the additional strength required to stand up to the live stage.

Style:

While style is not a huge factor in overall value, defining your style these days has never been more important.  Make sure you like how your DJ headphones look, and that they compliment who you are as a performer.

A lot of factors go in to deciding what the perfect headphones are for your style.  Make sure that you check out the reviews on the DJ headphones that you’re interested in before purchasing them.  Headphones are a huge part of any live performer’s equipment and they easily define your style.  As a result, quality gear has never been more important.
